In an effort to eradicate the lingering threat posed by unexploded ordnances stemming from the 2002 Ikeja Cantonment Bomb Blast, the Nigerian Army has initiated the concluding phase of its cleanup operation, named “EXERCISE CLEAN SWEEP,” in Owode Ajilete, Ogun State.
The operation, which began on October 10, 2023, has made significant progress, with the recovery of various calibers of unexploded ordnances. A total of 642 ordnances were professionally disposed of on October 27, 2023, at the Nigerian Army Range in Owode Ajilete.
Having successfully completed the search and recovery phase, the exercise has now transitioned to the final inspection of the site. Following the outlined plan discussed during the Inauguration Press briefing and Flag Off by Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja on October 10, 2023, a concluding Unexploded Ordnance Disposal (UXO) task is scheduled for Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the Nigerian Army Range in Owode Ajilete.
As part of the disposal process, there will be a transfer of unexploded ordnances from Ikeja Cantonment to the Nigerian Army Range, and the detonation exercise will generate substantial sounds. In light of this, the public, especially residents in Owode, Ajilete, and surrounding areas, are advised not to panic upon hearing explosions but to carry on with their regular activities. Stringent safety measures have been implemented to guarantee the protection of life and property throughout the exercise.
Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized the importance of cooperation from the public in ensuring the smooth and safe execution of the final disposal operation. The exercise signifies a crucial step towards mitigating the potential risks associated with unexploded ordnances, underscoring the Nigerian Army’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizens.
The final Unexploded Ordnance Disposal task marks a significant milestone in bringing closure to the long-standing repercussions of the 2002 Ikeja Cantonment Bomb Blast, and the Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering a secure environment for all.
