In a strongly-worded statement issued today, Amnesty International has vehemently condemned the brutal attack on peaceful protesters in Kano that transpired on 22nd November 2023, orchestrated by the police. The human rights organization is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the seven individuals apprehended during the incident.
The protesters, well within their legal rights to assemble, were met with excessive force in what appears to be a heavy-handed clampdown aimed at intimidating citizens and obstructing their fundamental right to freedom of assembly. The deployment of tear gas and water cannons by law enforcement resulted in numerous injuries among the demonstrators.
Amnesty International is urging the Nigerian authorities to uphold human rights standards and put an end to the assault on protesters. Despite constitutional protections safeguarding the right to peaceful protest, Nigeria has consistently faced criticism for its dismal track record of violently suppressing demonstrations and stifling dissent.
The international human rights organization is unequivocally demanding accountability from Nigerian authorities for the violation of the Kano protesters’ rights and is emphatically urging the swift administration of justice to ensure redress for the affected demonstrators. Amnesty International continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the critical need for the protection of citizens’ rights and the upholding of democratic values in Nigeria.
