In a bid to reinforce the protection of human rights within the business sphere and explore innovative approaches to dispute resolution, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has declared its commitment to collaborating with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, made this announcement during a courtesy visit by the newly elected executives of ACCI, led by Chief Emeka Obegolu (SAN), in Abuja.
Dr. Ojukwu emphasized the Commission’s dedication to fostering human rights observance in business practices. He underscored the importance of continuous learning and expressed the Commission’s readiness to partner with ACCI to enhance human rights protection and address business-related disputes in the country.
During the meeting, Dr. Ojukwu conveyed information about the Nigeria National Action Plan (2023-2025), approved by the Federal Government in April 2023 and subsequently presented to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. He highlighted the plan’s focus on Business and Human Rights, aligning with ACCI’s mandate, and reassured the visiting delegation of NHRC’s commitment to creating a safe and sustainable business environment in Nigeria.
Dr. Ojukwu welcomed ACCI’s initiatives and pledged NHRC’s support in facilitating the proposed training programs. He emphasized the importance of integrating human rights principles into business practices and expressed optimism about the positive impact of the collaboration between NHRC and ACCI.
Chief Emeka Obegolu (SAN), President of ACCI, expressed his pleasure at partnering with NHRC, particularly in the areas of manpower development and training. He outlined ACCI’s key interests, including human resources development for businesses, the establishment of a Dispute Resolution Centre, a Policy and Advocacy Center, Abuja Trade Center, a Center for Business and Human Rights, and advisory services on investment choices.
Chief Obegolu highlighted ACCI’s capability to amicably resolve disputes among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and address human rights complaints in collaboration with NHRC, without necessarily involving law enforcement agencies.
The ACCI delegation also included Sir Agabaidu Jideani, the new Director General of ACCI, and a former member of the Governing Council of NHRC, demonstrating the alignment of interests between the two organizations. The partnership between NHRC and ACCI aims to contribute significantly to promoting human rights awareness and ensuring a conducive environment for businesses in Nigeria.
