Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has clinched the top prize at the inaugural ECOWAS Moot Court Competition, securing a cash award of ₦5 million. The University of Jos emerged as first runner-up, receiving ₦3 million.
Organized by the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, the maiden edition of the competition brought together undergraduate law students from eight universities: ABU Zaria, University of Jos, American University of Nigeria (Yola), University of Nigeria (Nsukka), Igbinedion University (Okada), Lagos State University (Ojo), Afe Babalola University (Ado-Ekiti), and University of Uyo.
Held under the theme “Promoting Regional Integration and Human Rights through Judicial Processes in West Africa,” the event aimed to foster youth engagement in legal processes and regional cooperation.

In his closing remarks, the President of the Court, Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Goncalves, hailed the competition as a “historic milestone” and a “beacon of hope” for the future of legal practice in West Africa. He praised the participants’ eloquence, analytical skills, and professionalism, declaring that “every team is a winner.”
Justice Goncalves announced plans to institutionalize the competition as an annual flagship event and expand participation to universities across all ECOWAS Member States. “By creating platforms such as this, the Court demystifies its work and fosters a legal culture rooted in justice, human rights, and regional integration,” he stated.
The Vice-President of the Court, Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma, who delivered the vote of thanks, described the competition as a successful blend of vision and execution. Commending the students, mentors, judges, and partners, he noted: “Whether or not you won today, you have all emerged as ambassadors of law and justice in the ECOWAS region.”
