The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the commencement of Air Algérie’s inaugural direct flight service from Algiers, Algeria, to Abuja, Nigeria, scheduled for Sunday, April 6, 2025.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, highlighted the significance of this milestone, noting that it represents a major advancement in the diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Algeria.
“This historic development is a direct outcome of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the two nations, reinforcing their shared commitment to enhancing cooperation in aviation, commerce, and people-to-people exchanges,” the statement read.
The new route will be operated by Air Algérie, Algeria’s national carrier, using a Boeing 737 aircraft. The service is expected to improve connectivity, promote tourism, and facilitate trade and investment between Nigeria and Algeria. The Ministry commended the pivotal role played by the Embassy of Nigeria in Algiers in ensuring the successful realization of this initiative. Dignitaries, including the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers, representatives of the Nigerian community in Algeria, and officials from the Algerian government, are expected to be on board the inaugural flight.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant aviation authorities, has pledged full support for the success and sustainability of this new service. The government also emphasized the broader benefits of the route, stating:
“The introduction of this direct flight not only strengthens the long-standing ties between Nigeria and Algeria but also provides Nigerians with an accessible gateway to Europe, given Algeria’s strategic location. This initiative will enhance Nigeria’s role as a regional hub for business, tourism, and transit while offering an affordable and convenient travel option.”
The Ministry encouraged Nigerian citizens and the business community to take advantage of this enhanced connectivity, which will operate twice weekly, to explore trade, tourism, and cultural exchange opportunities between both nations.
The Nigerian government looks forward to a successful inaugural flight and a thriving partnership with Air Algérie.
