In a historic session at the National Assembly, the President of the Senate, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, delivered a profound welcome speech as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, presented the 2025 Appropriation Bills.
In his address, Senator Akpabio underscored the importance of the occasion as a demonstration of Nigeria’s enduring democracy and collective aspirations. He commended President Tinubu for his transformative leadership, citing major milestones such as economic reforms, improved security, infrastructure development, and advancements in social welfare programs.
“Under your administration, we have witnessed bold steps such as the removal of fuel subsidies, which, though challenging, have redirected resources to vital sectors like education and healthcare,” Akpabio said, praising Tinubu’s courage in making difficult decisions for the nation’s long-term benefit.
He highlighted achievements such as increased government revenues to over NGN 18.32 trillion, reduced debt servicing expenditures, rising oil production levels, and the implementation of the Compressed Natural Gas initiative. Akpabio also lauded reforms in tax policies and infrastructure development, framing these initiatives as cornerstones of a revitalized Nigerian economy.
The Senate President expressed admiration for the President’s security measures, which have led to the liberation of communities from terrorism and a significant reduction in insurgent activities. He further applauded strides in foreign relations that have bolstered Nigeria’s global standing and increased foreign direct investment.
Akpabio reaffirmed the legislature’s support for the President’s vision while emphasizing the need for mutual respect between the Executive and Legislative arms of government. He called on ministers and heads of extraministerial departments to uphold constitutional responsibilities, particularly regarding legislative oversight.
Addressing the public, Akpabio acknowledged the economic hardships faced by Nigerians but likened them to the “pains of childbirth,” urging patience and unity as the government works towards long-term prosperity.
