Akwa Ibom Government condemns employment practices of foreign oil firm

The Akwa Ibom State Government has issued a stern warning against the exploitation of workers by Sterling Global Petrochemical Company, a foreign oil prospecting firm. Addressing allegations of non-compliance with globally accepted employment conditions, the government emphasized that it will not tolerate any actions undermining the dignity and rights of Akwa Ibom workers in both public and private sectors.

Chief Assam Assam, SAN, the Director General of Government Business and former Nigerian Ambassador to Russia and Belarus, conveyed the government’s stance. As chairman of the mediation committee between the oil firm and affected communities in Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, and Eastern Obolo, Chief Assam criticized Sterling Global for their alleged insensitivity and use of military intimidation. He stressed that Akwa Ibom people must not be treated as second-class citizens and warned the company to adhere to the labor-friendly policies of Governor Umo Eno or face the revocation of their operational land.

Chief Assam demanded transparency from Sterling Global, insisting on a clear nominal roll of employees to ensure no illegal activities occur under the guise of equipment importation. He expressed concerns over the company’s opaque operations and potential security risks.

Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Mr. Aniefiok Nkom, accused Sterling Global of irresponsibility, citing their disregard for court orders and refusal to participate in state-mediated discussions. Additionally, Executive Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Okon Okon, revealed that Sterling Global has evaded paying tenement and PAYE taxes, further indicating questionable practices.

Local government chairmen from Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, and Eastern Obolo lauded the state government’s intervention, highlighting the severe distress caused by Sterling Global’s actions. The State Government remains committed to ensuring fair treatment and safeguarding the welfare of its workers.
