Amnesty International calls for urgent action after deadly attack, mass abduction in Kogi

Amnesty International has condemned the attack on Ayegunle Bunu community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State on 1 June 2026, in which armed men killed one person and abducted more than 30 others, including passengers travelling in a commercial bus.

The organisation described the incident as a serious violation of international human rights law, including the rights to life, liberty and security of persons, noting that it further highlights the continued vulnerability of rural communities and road users to armed violence and mass kidnappings in parts of Nigeria.

Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to urgently, thoroughly and transparently investigate the attack, ensure the safe release of all abducted persons, and bring those responsible to justice through fair judicial processes.

It further urged the government to strengthen protection mechanisms for at-risk communities and implement concrete preventive measures to avert similar attacks in the future.

The organisation stressed that sustained insecurity of this nature continues to undermine public safety, disrupt livelihoods, and expose residents in rural areas to persistent threats from armed groups.
