Amnesty International has strongly condemned the brazen invasion of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters by armed security personnel. The chilling raid, which occurred last night, appears to be a calculated attack aimed at intimidating the labour union.
The organization stated that the raid undermines workers’ rights to organize, bargain collectively, and take industrial action. During the raid, security personnel allegedly “ransacked books at the bookshop, carrying all the materials into their van, claiming that the materials were used to incite and organize the recent protest.”
Amnesty International expressed deep concern for the safety of NLC officials. The organization emphasized that under international human rights law and standards, trade unions cannot be targeted for their participation in union activities. Nigeria has an obligation not only to respect but also to protect the rights of trade unions from abuse.
