In a concerning development, Amnesty International has strongly denounced the Department of State Services (DSS) for its assault on human rights defender Omoyele Sowore, marking yet another instance of disregard for fundamental human rights. The incident occurred as Sowore, accompanied by several individuals, was en route to the Federal High Court in Abuja to obtain the certified true copy of his recently dismissed treasonable felony case.
The assault, which entailed denying Sowore access to the court premises, further escalated as DSS personnel confiscated one of his mobile phones. This brazen act not only violated Sowore’s rights but also constitutes an infringement on freedom of movement and expression.
Amnesty International has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the imperative of holding accountable those responsible for the assault and seizure of Sowore’s personal property. Additionally, the organization has urged the prompt return of Sowore’s mobile phone, highlighting the need to rectify the unjust actions perpetrated against him.
Such flagrant violations of human rights by security agencies undermine the principles of justice and democracy, eroding public trust and perpetuating impunity. Amnesty International’s condemnation underscores the urgency of addressing systemic issues within the DSS and ensuring adherence to international human rights standards.
As pressure mounts for accountability and redress, it is imperative that the DSS takes swift and decisive action to investigate the incident, hold perpetrators accountable, and uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals, including human rights defenders like Omoyele Sowore.
