Amnesty International condemns Plateau massacre

Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the killing of 24 people by gunmen during an attack on Bin Mper community in Kombun District, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, left several residents dead and others injured, with Amnesty International describing the incident as one of the deadliest recent attacks in the state.

The rights organisation said graphic images obtained from the scene showed entire families allegedly locked inside rooms and killed, including mothers carrying babies on their backs. In one of the images, five girls were reportedly found slaughtered on their mother’s bed.

Amnesty International said blood and bodies were found inside houses and on verandas across the community, describing the killings as an act of “utter cruelty” and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life.

The organisation called for an immediate investigation into the security lapses that allegedly allowed the attackers to carry out the assault, stressing that those responsible must be identified and brought to justice.

It also questioned the effectiveness of the Federal Government’s response to the country’s worsening insecurity, particularly in Plateau State.

“While President Bola Tinubu claims his government is implementing new security measures to address the rising insecurity in the country, recent attacks in Plateau State show that whatever security measures are being implemented are not working,” Amnesty International said.

The victims have since been given a mass burial, while several injured residents are receiving treatment at various hospitals.

Amnesty International urged the authorities to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities, conduct a credible investigation into the attack and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
