Amnesty International has condemned remarks attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, accusing the lawmaker of inciting supporters to attack members of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
In a statement, the human rights organisation described the senator’s reported comments, captured on video during a campaign event, as reckless and potentially capable of fuelling violence during the election.
Amnesty International said the remarks were unacceptable and called on Nigerian authorities to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible for incitement to violence is held accountable.
The organisation stressed that Nigerian authorities at all levels have an obligation to prohibit advocacy of hatred where it constitutes incitement to hostility, discrimination or violence.
It also urged government authorities to publicly denounce statements that promote hatred or violence, whether made at political rallies, online or through other platforms.
“Political parties have an obligation to renounce incitement and distance themselves from hateful or inciting remarks by their members or supporters,” the organisation said.
Amnesty International warned that inflammatory political rhetoric could heighten tensions and undermine the credibility and safety of the electoral process, particularly as the August 15 governorship poll approaches.
It condemned all forms of incitement to electoral violence and called on federal and state authorities to take urgent measures to prevent violence and protect voters, candidates and other participants in the electoral process.
The organisation specifically demanded accountability for Senator Fadahunsi, insisting that political status should not shield any individual from investigation or appropriate legal action where evidence of incitement to violence is established.
The call comes amid heightened attention to political rhetoric ahead of the Osun governorship election, with stakeholders urged to promote peaceful campaigns and ensure that the electoral process is conducted without threats, intimidation or violence.
