Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to urgently investigate the alleged extrajudicial execution of two residents by its personnel in Karmajiji community, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement, the human rights organisation identified the operative involved as Ajayi Abayomi and said the incident occurred on 19 January 2026, describing it as another troubling example of reckless and unlawful use of firearms and abuse of power by security agents.
According to Amnesty International, the first victim, Musa Adamu, died a few hours after the incident, while the second victim, Mallam Suleiman Salisu, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, 28 January, at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.
The organisation demanded a thorough, independent investigation and insisted that anyone found responsible must be held accountable through a fair and transparent trial. It warned that such a grave violation of human rights must not be ignored or swept under the carpet.
Amnesty International further expressed concern that, rather than protecting citizens, some security personnel are increasingly instilling fear within communities, thereby eroding public trust and leaving civilians vulnerable to abuses and impunity.
Citing past incidents, the group recalled that on 7 September 2023, a DSS operative allegedly killed a fashion designer at Garki International Market, Abuja, following an altercation linked to a civil dispute involving the operative’s girlfriend and her tailor.
The organisation also raised alarm over what it described as a growing pattern in which security personnel overstep their lawful mandate by intervening in civil, contractual, business, and other non-criminal disputes, sometimes subjecting individuals to torture and other forms of abuse.
Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to reaffirm the rule of law and ensure that all security agencies operate strictly within their legal and constitutional limits.
