Amnesty International has warned politicians and their associates against using ongoing political campaigns to make reckless, inciting and divisive remarks capable of undermining peace and fundamental freedoms.
The international human rights organisation said it was closely monitoring and documenting statements made by political actors and their associates during the ongoing campaigns.
In a statement, Amnesty International said individuals found to be exploiting campaign activities to undermine freedom, peace and security would be held accountable in accordance with international law.
The organisation stressed that political campaigns must not become platforms for incitement, intimidation or rhetoric capable of provoking violence and threatening citizens’ rights.
It urged political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint and uphold human rights, peaceful participation and democratic principles throughout the campaign period.
