Amnesty raises alarm over detention of Nasarawa activist

Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over the continued detention of Kabiru Ibrahim Dallah, describing it as unlawful and a troubling example of growing repression of freedom of expression in Nigeria.

In a statement, the human rights organization said Dallah was arrested last year over alleged criticism of the Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State, Mr. Laraban Shu’aibu Magaji, and has remained in custody at the Lafia Correctional Centre for more than 40 days.

Amnesty alleged that there are plans to subject Dallah to what it described as a “sham trial” based on unfounded charges, noting that all attempts to secure his bail have been rejected. The organization said his continued detention under poor conditions appears aimed solely at punishing him for expressing critical views.

According to Amnesty, Dallah’s ordeal reflects a broader pattern of impunity and abuse of power by government officials, as well as an increasing clampdown on individuals who exercise their right to freedom of expression.

The rights group described Dallah as a victim of a deliberate attempt to silence dissent and called for his immediate and unconditional release.

Amnesty also warned that the right to freedom of expression, particularly among young Nigerians, is under growing threat, citing a rise in cases of threats, arrests, illegal detention, and harassment linked to opinions expressed online.

The organization stressed that such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society and urged authorities to respect and protect the fundamental rights of citizens to freely express their views without fear of reprisal.
