The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his reported claim that financial difficulties prevented him from affording medication for his late mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, CON, the APC expressed condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother and prayed for the former minister’s health.
However, the party subsequently launched a scathing attack on Amaechi, questioning his ability to manage his affairs outside public office.
The APC recalled Amaechi’s previous public positions, including two terms as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two terms as governor of Rivers State and two terms as Minister of Transportation, as well as his presidential bid.
The party also referenced Amaechi’s reported comments about experiencing financial hardship after leaving public office, including an earlier claim that his wife was feeding him.
According to the APC, Amaechi’s statements raise questions about his capacity to sustain himself and his family outside the benefits associated with holding public office.
The party accused the former governor of having depended excessively on public office and described his reported financial difficulties as evidence of what it called an inability to be productive outside government patronage.
The APC further criticised Amaechi’s ambition to become Vice President in the 2027 general elections, arguing that the presidency should not be used as a means of addressing personal financial difficulties.
“The presidency is not a soup kitchen and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” the party said.
The APC concluded that Amaechi’s own public statements, rather than the party’s criticism, provided the strongest basis for its argument concerning his suitability for the vice-presidential office.
Amaechi is currently associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to the APC statement.
