Arase urges accessibility and trust-building for police public relations officers

In a directive aimed at enhancing public engagement and fostering trust, Dr. Solomon Arase CFR, retired Inspector General of Police and Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), has charged Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) within the various state Commands and Departments of the Nigeria Police Force. Emphasizing the need for accessibility, dedication, and commitment to duty, Dr. Arase underscored the critical role PROs play in shaping public opinion and maintaining the positive image of the Nigeria Police Force.

Dr.Arase stated this  during the Annual Conference of Police Public Relations Officers held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the Commission, conveyed Dr. Arase’s message to the media. Dr. Arase stressed the importance of PROs understanding their role as servants of the public, emphasizing that their actions significantly impact the image of the police force.

Mr. Ani highlighted Dr. Arase’s perspective, stating that the work of Police Public Relations Officers is challenging and requires dedication and commitment. Dr. Arase emphasized the significance of trust-building, stating that effective communication hinges on establishing a deep trust with citizens, particularly at a time when crime has evolved into a mobile enterprise.

Dr. Arase acknowledged the dynamic and challenging nature of the operating environment, urging the Nigeria Police Force to stay ahead of the curve in adapting to changing public opinion. He urged PROs to be proactive in shaping public opinion, not merely reacting to it.

The PSC Chairman recognized the importance of the Annual Conference in bringing together Public Relations Officers to strategize on information management, essential for effective policing in Nigeria’s diverse environment. He urged participants to consider the impact of globalization and the democratization of information, stressing the need for a comprehensive review of engagement strategies with the public.

Dr. Arase concluded by assuring continued support from the Police Service Commission, pledging to highlight the success stories of the Nigeria Police Force in their communications to the public. The commitment to effective communication and collaboration, he believes, will lead to greater success in the shared goal of ensuring internal security.
