The Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to inform the public of a minor explosion that occurred today, Monday, April 1, 2024, within the confines of the Ikeja Cantonment in Lagos. The incident took place on a farmland adjacent to the Mammy Market within the Cantonment premises.
In a statement issued by Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, it was revealed that the explosion is suspected to have been caused by the burning of refuse and other inflammable debris by a farmer tending to the farmland.
He said there were no casualties resulting from the incident. While acknowledging potential concerns among the public due to past incidents of explosions within the Cantonment, Major General Nwachukwu reassured the populace that the situation is well managed. The NA Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has promptly cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion.
“We understand the apprehension this incident might raise, given the historical context. However, we want to assure the public that safety measures are in place, and the situation is under control,” stated Nwachukwu. He urged residents in the vicinity not to panic, emphasizing their safety.
The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the security and well-being of all residents within and around Ikeja Cantonment.
