Army, Air Force deepen operational coordination against terrorism in North-West

The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) have strengthened operational collaboration with the Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre (AWDC) in a renewed push against terrorism and banditry in North-West Nigeria.

According to Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations 8 Division Nigerian Army / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA Lieut. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the partnership was reinforced during a courtesy visit by the Commandant of AWDC, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Jibia, to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 OPFY, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna.

Welcoming the delegation, Major General Koughna commended Air Vice Marshal Jibia for his distinguished service and leadership across various command appointments. He pledged the full support of 8 Division to AWDC, underscoring the need for sustained engagement and inter-service collaboration to overcome shared operational challenges. The GOC reaffirmed his commitment to supporting AWDC initiatives, assuring proactive assistance, even ahead of formal requests.

In his remarks, Air Vice Marshal Jibia congratulated Major General Koughna on his appointment and expressed confidence in his capacity to positively impact the security situation in the North-West. He noted that many Nigerian Air Force personnel remain insufficiently aware of AWDC’s core responsibilities, which include reviewing, developing and updating Air Force doctrine, refining employment concepts, teaching doctrine, and enhancing operational competence to facilitate joint operations through integrated exercises.

To effectively deliver on these mandates, the AWDC Commandant emphasized the need for greater sensitization and the identification of operational gaps, particularly in air–drone integration and the translation of doctrine into practical frontline application. He stressed that effective air–ground integration remains central to AWDC’s mission, ensuring seamless cooperation between air and land forces for optimal air power delivery.

The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs and group photographs, symbolizing the strengthened partnership between the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
