Army deny alleged detention of journalist in Port Harcourt

The Nigerian Army’s 6 Division has refuted reports circulating on social media alleging the detention of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo in Port Harcourt.

In a statement issued on November 29, 2024, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, described the reports, published by Sahara Reporters, as misleading and lacking factual accuracy.

According to the Army, Soyombo was arrested alongside other suspects during a recent operation targeting a notorious oil theft syndicate in the region. Troops, acting on intelligence, raided an illegal oil bunkering site where several individuals, including Soyombo, were apprehended.

The suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigation to determine their involvement in the illegal activities.

“The arrest is linked to the ongoing efforts to curb illegal oil bunkering and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta. Media outlets are urged to verify their information before publication,” the statement emphasized.

The 6 Division reassured the public of its commitment to tackling oil theft and other criminal activities in the region, aiming to boost national oil and gas production.
