The Army Headquarters (AHQ) Team specializing in the drafting of Contingency Plans and Campaign Plans visited Headquarters 2 Division, Nigerian Army (NA) Ibadan. Led by Major General AM Alechenu, Deputy Chief of Operations (Army), the purpose of the visit was to conduct a comprehensive sensitization lecture aimed at enhancing relevant NA operations through improved planning procedures.
Polycarp Okoye, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations at 2 Division Nigerian Army, reported on the highpoints of the lecture, highlighting the commitment of the Nigerian Army to enhancing planning capabilities for effective operations
During the opening of the one-day lecture, Major General Alechenu emphasized the critical importance of educating commanders and staff officers on the meticulous drafting of Contingency Plans and Campaign Plans. He underscored that such plans are essential in guiding NA operations towards achieving predetermined military objectives and desired end states.
Highlighting the rationale behind the tour, Major General Alechenu noted that discrepancies were identified in the Contingency Plans used by various formations in defending their Areas of Responsibility (AOR). As part of the Department of Army Operations (AHQ DAOPS) initiatives, a review in 2023 highlighted the necessity of guiding commanders and staff officers across Divisions and Theatres on drafting effective Contingency Plans. He emphasized the need for unified standards in plan formulation, stressing that while there are no absolute right or wrong answers, adherence to accepted standards is crucial.
The lecture also addressed the significance of Campaign Plans in operations where threats are known. The AHQ DAOPS team reiterated its role in providing strategic guidance to formations for developing Campaign Plans aligned with NA objectives.

Lieutenant Colonel MO Olaosegba, the resource person, emphasized that planning is a universal activity extending beyond the military sphere. He outlined prevalent challenges associated with Contingency and Campaign Planning and highlighted the importance of organizing sensitization lectures to address these gaps.
In his remarks, Major General OG Onubogu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division NA, stressed the importance of revisiting planning processes and practicalizing them within AORs. He emphasized the crucial role of well-drafted Contingency and Campaign Plans in achieving operational success, advocating for a maneuverist approach to warfare.
The GOC commended AHQ DAOPS for their initiative and thanked the team for their efforts in delivering the lectures across Divisions. The lecture concluded with a robust interactive session and a group photograph.
