Army refutes widow neglect allegations, reaffirms welfare commitment

The Nigerian Army has responded to recent online reports alleging neglect of widows of fallen soldiers, describing the claims as misleading and unverified. The reports, shared on May 18, 2025, by Instagram account @hausaroom and Punch Newspaper, also alleged incidents of sexual harassment and bribery during the processing of death benefits.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of deceased personnel’s families and outlined several established welfare structures. These include death gratuity, burial expenses, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) financial support, Group Personnel Accident Insurance, the Nigerian Army Welfare Insurance Scheme (NAWIS), Benevolent Funds, Group Life Insurance, and the withdrawal of contributions from the Federal Housing Scheme.

“These benefits are disbursed to next-of-kin (NOK) upon completion of proper documentation and verification processes,” the Army stated. “We also operate a comprehensive scholarship program that supports the children of fallen soldiers through tertiary education.”

Addressing the allegations of sexual harassment and extortion, the Army stressed that it has not received any formal complaint through its Human Rights Desks or other investigative channels. It urged anyone with credible evidence to come forward via official platforms to enable a full investigation and ensure accountability.

The Army also encouraged individuals making the claims to provide specific information—such as the identity of the deceased personnel and the benefits allegedly withheld—to facilitate proper review and resolution.

While expressing sympathy for the emotional and financial strain experienced by some widows, the Army emphasized the importance of verifying facts before publicizing sensitive claims. “Unsubstantiated allegations can erode public trust and cause undue distress to other affected families,” the statement noted.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the continued support of personnel and their families, both during and after service.
