Former Vice-President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar (Waziri Adamawa), has joined other prominent Nigerians in paying tribute to Professor Mustapha Akinkunmi, a distinguished Professor of Development Economics, as he marks another year.

In the tribute, Professor Akinkunmi was described as a scholar of exceptional depth whose life has been defined by service, intellectual excellence and enduring personal relationships. Over the years, Professor Akinkunmi has established himself as a leading development economist, influencing policy discourse and mentoring generations of students across the country. His scholarship and teaching, Atiku noted, have contributed significantly to shaping economic thinking and building human capital.

Beyond academia, his national service has been particularly impactful through his role as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria. In that capacity, he has brought rigour, insight and professionalism to monetary policy deliberations, helping to steer the economy toward stability and sustainable growth.

The former Vice-President also highlighted Professor Akinkunmi’s personal qualities, describing him as a loyal and dependable friend whose wisdom, humility and generosity have earned him respect across professional and personal circles.
