Atiku calls for probe into allegations sexual harassment against Akpabio

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has called for a full, transparent, and independent investigation into the serious allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Abubakar expressed deep concern over the allegations, emphasizing the need for due process and accountability at the highest levels of government. “Like millions of Nigerians, I watched with deep concern as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised serious allegations against the Senate President. These claims are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation,” he said.

The former Vice President stressed that the Nigerian Senate, as the legislative arm representing the people, must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect. He stated that public officers, particularly those in leadership positions, have a responsibility to set an example for good governance and ethical conduct.

“The Senate President, as the third most powerful figure in the country, should embody unimpeachable character. Sexual harassment in the workplace is a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress. Allegations of such misconduct should never be simply dismissed, particularly when they involve a public officer with immense power, influence, and responsibility,” Abubakar noted.

He further stated that as the chief presiding officer of the Senate, Akpabio has a duty to protect and empower Nigerian women through legislative action, not to be at the center of allegations that undermine those principles. Abubakar warned that how the matter is handled would send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and gender equality in governance.

Abubakar called on President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to ensure the allegations are treated with the seriousness they deserve by launching an independent probe. He also noted that with only four women currently serving in the Senate, it is imperative to create a legislative environment where female lawmakers can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation.

“This moment demands careful and principled action to uphold the integrity of our institutions and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of gender, is treated with dignity and respect,” he concluded.

The allegations against Akpabio have sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and transparency in handling the case. As pressure mounts, the response of the federal government and the Senate will be closely watched as a test of Nigeria’s commitment to justice and gender equity in leadership.
