Atiku condemns attacks on Niger state, calls for swift action

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the recent violent attacks on communities in Agwarra and Borgu Local Government Areas of Niger State, which reportedly claimed scores of lives and led to the abduction of several residents, including schoolchildren.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice-President from 1999 to 2007 and holds the traditional title of Waziri Adamawa, described the assaults as heinous, brazen, and unacceptable, noting that the scale of brutality against defenceless communities was deeply troubling.

He extended his condolences to families who lost loved ones and affirmed his solidarity with the people and government of Niger State during what he described as a painful and challenging period.

The former Vice-President said his thoughts and prayers were with the families of the deceased and those abducted, particularly the children, and urged relevant authorities to act swiftly to secure their safe and unconditional release.

Emphasising that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government, Atiku called for urgent measures to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, restore confidence in affected communities, and ensure that the perpetrators of the attacks are brought to justice.
