The Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, has called on the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff to bolster their security cooperation to enhance defence capabilities against emerging security threats.
Badaru made this appeal during the 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, which was attended by the Minister of Interior and top officials from service agencies under the CDCFIB.
The two-day meeting brought together military leaders from across West Africa to address the region’s urgent security challenges. The Minister highlighted the critical importance of collective action in combating terrorism, cross-border crimes, and hybrid threats. He stressed the need for stronger regional security cooperation to protect member states and promote sustainable development.
Badaru noted that the meeting would focus on key issues, including the proposed ECOWAS Security Support Mission in Sierra Leone, ongoing peace operations, and the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force.
The Minister encouraged open dialogue, shared expertise, and collaborative strategies to strengthen security cooperation and enhance the region’s defence capabilities. He reiterated the commitment to achieving peace and security in West Africa, emphasizing that the region’s current security landscape presents complex challenges that require joint efforts to counter terrorism and manage cross-border crimes.
