Bandit leaders surrender arms and captives in Katsina

In a significant stride toward curbing banditry in Katsina State, notorious bandit leaders Abu Radde and Umar Black have surrendered their arms and released several captives. This development comes in the wake of intensified military operations by the combined forces of Operation FASAN YANMA in Batsari and Safana Local Government Areas.

The surrender ceremony, held on January 19, 2025, in Batsari, was a well-coordinated event attended by key stakeholders, including military representatives, local authorities, and community leaders, ensuring a transparent process. The bandits handed over four AK47 rifles and released 15 captives, comprising three men, eight women, and four children.

Military officials emphasized that this surrender was neither a negotiation nor a peace meeting but a decisive step toward the bandits’ complete disarmament and the full release of all kidnapped victims. The arms surrendered, which were reported to be in good condition, are now in the custody of the 17 Brigade. The captives, after being freed, were handed over to the Local Government Authorities, where they will receive rehabilitation and aftercare services.

This move is seen as a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in Katsina State. The combined forces of Operation FASAN YANMA have been relentless in their mission to eliminate banditry and criminal activities that have plagued the region for years.

Community leaders and local residents have expressed optimism about the potential end of the banditry crisis, emphasizing the importance of sustained military operations and community cooperation in maintaining long-term peace. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens and providing the necessary support for the rehabilitation of former captives.

The successful surrender by Abu Radde and Umar Black sets a precedent for other bandits to follow, with hopes that more will lay down their arms and join the path of peace.
