The Borno State Government has confirmed that 40 farmers were killed in a terrorist attack on Dumba community, near Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area. The attack, suspected to be carried out by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, occurred on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attack, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to trace those who escaped and reunite them with their families. In a statement issued by Borno State Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, the government assured that investigations are underway to understand the circumstances of the attack.
Governor Zulum urged the military, specifically Operation Hadin Kai, to track and neutralize the insurgents operating in the Lake Chad area. He extended sympathies to the victims’ families and assured the public of thorough investigations and necessary actions to prevent future attacks.
The statement highlighted that the farmers ventured beyond the established security corridor into uncleared areas prone to terrorist activities and landmines. The government reiterated the importance of staying within demarcated safe zones to ensure safety while allowing the military to conduct operations in insecure areas.
Governor Zulum commended the armed forces for their efforts in clearing land for resettlement and agriculture, urging farmers and local communities to operate within safe corridors to prevent further tragedies. The government called on citizens to report any unusual activities to security forces for swift action.
