Borno Flood: FG begins reconstruction of Alau dam to restore livelihoods

The Federal Government has commenced the reconstruction of Alau Dam in Maiduguri, which collapsed on September 10, 2024, causing severe flooding that submerged over half of Borno State’s capital and its environs.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, emphasized that restoring the dam would help rebuild livelihoods and restore dignity to communities devastated by the disaster. “This groundbreaking ceremony is a testament to the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to rebuilding Borno State—not just in terms of infrastructure, but also in restoring the livelihoods and dignity of our citizens,” Zulum stated.

Impact of the Dam’s Collapse

Built between 1984 and 1986, Alau Dam stored water from the Ngadda River, a tributary of Lake Chad, serving as a crucial source for irrigation and potable water. Its collapse resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of thousands, and destruction of farmlands and homes.

Key Benefits of Reconstruction

Governor Zulum outlined several expected benefits from the dam’s rehabilitation, including:

  • Enhanced agricultural productivity through improved irrigation systems, boosting food security and economic growth.
  • Increased access to potable water, reducing water shortages in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
  • Flood control, preventing future disasters.
  • Economic diversification and community empowerment, creating jobs and stimulating local businesses.

Zulum thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the reconstruction within a short period, recognizing his administration’s commitment to sustainable development.

Phased Reconstruction Plan

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, who served as the special guest of honor, announced that the rehabilitation will occur in two phases over 24 months:

  • Phase One (February – September 2025): Focuses on critical interventions to mitigate immediate flood risks.
  • Phase Two (October 2025 Onward): Covers extensive dredging and structural enhancements to ensure the dam’s long-term resilience.

“The reconstruction and upgrade of Alau Dam will significantly enhance potable water supply, boost agricultural activities, and strengthen flood control measures,” Prof. Utsev said.

Additional Development for Alau Community

In a further commitment to community development, Governor Zulum approved the construction of a primary school and hospital in Alau, urging residents to support the rehabilitation efforts.

“I have approved the construction of a primary school and hospital for Alau community to ensure its sustainable development,” Zulum announced.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The ceremony was attended by key government officials, including:

  • Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Chairman, Senate Committee on Water and Sanitation (represented by Senator Eze Ken Emeka).
  • Hon. Sada Jibia, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Water and Sanitation.
  • Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
