The non-governmental organization Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism, Insurgency, and Terrorism (BRAVE-IT) has lauded the military’s efforts in Plateau State while cautioning Nigerians against the spread of misinformation and unprovoked attacks on troops.
In a statement on Sunday, Lawrence Audu, Director of Corporate Communications for BRAVE-IT, highlighted the dangers of circulating outdated and misleading video content on social media. “We urge Nigerians to be cautious of false information and to verify facts before sharing. Spreading misinformation can escalate unnecessary tensions leading to instability, which can be detrimental to our collective security,” Audu stated.
BRAVE-IT also condemned the ongoing unprovoked attacks on troops, particularly in Bokkos Local Government Area, where women have been incited to block military operations. “These attacks are unacceptable and put our troops in danger. We call on those responsible to cease these attacks immediately and to allow our troops to perform their duties without hindrance,” said Audu.
Despite these challenges, BRAVE-IT commended the military’s efforts, particularly the non-kinetic operations aimed at achieving lasting peace in Plateau State. “We pass a vote of confidence on the military operating in Plateau State and urge them to continue their good work,” Audu added.
The organization praised the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for his dynamic leadership, which has led to significant successes against destabilizing forces nationwide. BRAVE-IT also recognized the Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, for transforming the Nigerian Army into a highly motivated force, enhancing the professional conduct of its officers and soldiers, and fostering synergy with other security agencies.
“We recognize the sacrifices made by our troops and security agencies in their efforts to keep our country safe,” Audu said. “We will continue to support their efforts and promote peaceful and stable communities.”
BRAVE-IT also commended Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), for his adept handling of farmer-herder disputes and stakeholder engagements, which have contributed to relative peace in Plateau State. The organization urged the state government to sustain these initiatives, facilitate the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their communities, and prevent future clashes.
Additionally, BRAVE-IT called for more effective resettlement and rehabilitation programs, emphasizing skill acquisition as a viable alternative to conflict. The organization criticized the State and Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), and other NGOs for their insufficient efforts in this regard.
“We thank the international Christian community and partners who have contributed relief materials to the IDPs but emphasize that the focus should not only be on providing food items but also on returning the IDPs back home,” Audu said.
In conclusion, BRAVE-IT urged all Nigerians to collaborate in building a peaceful and stable society free from violence and extremism.
