Breaking: NFF appoints Éric Chelle as Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Mr. Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team.

This decision, which marks a significant step in the Super Eagles’ quest for international success, was ratified by the NFF Executive Committee following a recommendation from its Technical and Development Sub-Committee during a meeting held on January 7, 2025.

Éric Chelle, a former defender who earned five caps for the Mali national team, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has an impressive coaching resume, having previously managed several clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. His most recent position was as the Head Coach of Mali’s national team, where he demonstrated his tactical acumen and leadership.

Chelle’s tenure with Mali’s Aiglons was notable for his near success at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. Under his guidance, Mali reached the quarterfinals and almost secured a semi-final spot, narrowly losing to the hosts, Côte d’Ivoire, after extra time. This achievement highlighted his ability to compete at the highest levels of African football.

The NFF’s decision to appoint Chelle reflects its ambition to leverage his experience and strategic insights to elevate the Super Eagles’ performance on the international stage. His primary objective will be to lead the team to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a crucial goal for Nigerian football. The upcoming matches in March, part of the World Cup qualification campaign, will be his first major test in this new role.

Éric Chelle’s appointment is effective immediately, and he is expected to work closely with the NFF to build a strong and competitive team. His extensive experience in European and African football is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the Super Eagles, blending tactical discipline with the dynamic flair that Nigerian football is known for.

The NFF expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to navigate the team through the challenges ahead, aiming for success in both the World Cup qualifiers and future international tournaments. This appointment is seen as a strategic move to rejuvenate the Super Eagles and reaffirm Nigeria’s position as a powerhouse in African football.
