British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery visited Kano and Jigawa

Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner, embarked on a diplomatic mission to Kano and Jigawa States from the 8th to the 11th of August. The purpose of this visit was to engage in high-level discussions with prominent figures including state governors, as well as influential individuals from the state government, civil society, business sector, and traditional leadership.

Over the span of four days, the High Commissioner held meetings with His Excellency Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, and His Excellency Malam Umar Namadi, the Governor of Jigawa State. These discussions centered around the enduring 20-year partnership between Kano and Jigawa, which has been fortified through the Mutual Accountability Framework (MAF) and strategic dialogues.

The Mutual Accountability Framework (MAF) has enabled the UK to provide support for the implementation of reforms by the state governments of Jigawa and Kano. These reforms aim to enhance various aspects of life, encompassing economic prosperity, education, healthcare, and governance.

During the visit, the High Commissioner also paid visits to esteemed figures including HRH Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, and HRH Alhaji Hameem Muhammadu Sanusi, the Emir of Dutse. In these meetings, he sought their valuable insights, advice, and encouragement to sustain support for UK-led initiatives within the states.

Engaging with partners of UK-funded programs and representatives from civil society organizations in both Kano and Jigawa states allowed the High Commissioner to gain an in-depth understanding of the progress and potential within the implemented programs.

Journeying to Jigawa State, the High Commissioner met with Deputy Governor Engr. Aminu Usman and Hajia Furera Jumare, the Director General of InvestJigawa, alongside other influential business leaders. This meeting aimed to explore collaborative opportunities that could stimulate economic growth and foster job creation within the state.

Concluding the visit, Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner, emphasized the significance of the trip. He stated, “My visit to Kano and Jigawa States provided a splendid opportunity to engage meaningfully with pivotal stakeholders. I listened, learned, and gained profound insights into the impact of our UK-funded initiatives, as well as the challenges and prospects they’ve highlighted. Our robust partnership with both states, spanning over two decades, remains pivotal. We are committed to nurturing these relationships, benefiting both their governments and citizens. Our objective is to bolster economic prosperity, elevate healthcare and education, and share valuable expertise wherever it can be of assistance.”
