Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger officially exit ECOWAS, retain some benefits

The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially taken effect today, following the expiration of the mandatory one-year notice period.

Despite their formal exit, ECOWAS has announced that it will maintain certain benefits for the three countries in a gesture of regional solidarity. The bloc stated that citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will still be able to use ECOWAS passports and identity cards, enjoy visa-free movement, and continue trade under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS).

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ECOWAS Commission emphasized that these arrangements would remain in place “until further notice” while discussions continue on the future relationship between the bloc and the three nations.

ECOWAS has set up a structure to facilitate dialogue on the next steps, underscoring its commitment to minimizing disruptions for citizens and businesses during the transition.
