In a significant drug bust, a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport for smuggling synthetic cannabis, commonly known as “Canadian Loud.” Munju, who was arriving in Nigeria for the first time via a KLM flight from Canada, was caught during an inspection of her luggage, where 74 parcels weighing 35.2 kilograms were discovered.
The suspect admitted to being recruited online to deliver the drugs for a fee of CAD 10,000, which she intended to use for her master’s degree tuition.
In another development, NDLEA operatives in Rivers State intercepted over N9 billion worth of opioids, including tramadol and codeine-based cough syrups. These drugs were seized during a joint operation at the Port Harcourt Ports, Onne, involving Customs and other agencies.
Simultaneously, NDLEA agents at Lagos’ Tincan seaport intercepted 50 kilograms of “Canadian Loud,” hidden in a shipment of vehicles from Canada. The contraband was tracked to a warehouse in Ikorodu, where it was found concealed inside a Toyota Sienna. A suspect, Abubakar Ibrahim, was apprehended in connection with the seizure.
In Taraba, two suspects were arrested after NDLEA officers uncovered opioids hidden in a bus coming from Anambra, while another man was caught smuggling cannabis concealed in garri bags. A separate raid led to the destruction of nearly 10,000 kilograms of cannabis on a farm in a boundary area between Edo and Ondo states.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi praised the agency’s continued efforts in combating drug abuse through arrests, seizures, and awareness campaigns across the country. The agency’s Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers for their dedication to reducing both drug supply and demand.
