Nigeria and China have emphasized the crucial role of cultural initiatives in fostering peace, highlighting the powerful connection between cultural expression and conflict resolution. This was the key message at the 5th National Entertainment and Peace Summit, themed “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” held in Abuja to commemorate World Peace Day 2024. The event was organized by Drum Majors for Peace in partnership with the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria.
Mr. Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, underscored the link between entertainment and peace, stating that entertainment alleviates negative emotions, fosters relaxation, and promotes unity across diverse backgrounds. He explained that despite national differences, people share common human emotions that can either lead to conflict or be harnessed to foster peace.
“Entertainment helps ease negative emotions, offering relaxation and a temporary escape from sadness. China places great importance on people-to-people communication and friendship through cultural exchange to promote global peace,” Mr. Yang stated. He also emphasized that the entertainment industry can serve as a bridge between Nigeria and China, deepening mutual understanding and collaboration.
The partnership between the two countries aims to use cultural diplomacy to advance peacebuilding efforts worldwide, with a particular focus on fostering stronger cultural ties and collaboration.
Ambassador Nsikan Paul, Executive Director of Drum Majors for Peace, reiterated his organization’s commitment to promoting peace, social cohesion, and inclusivity through entertainment, dialogue, and youth development. He emphasized that peace extends beyond the absence of conflict and requires intentional actions and initiatives.
“Creativity holds immense power in shaping a better world,” Paul remarked. “Through positive entertainment and meaningful dialogue, we aim to build sustainable, inclusive, and resilient communities in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”
He also highlighted efforts to empower young people, providing platforms for talent development and fostering responsible citizenship. The partnership’s success was further demonstrated by their win as Grand Prize winners of the Energy China Dance Competition, sponsored by the Chinese Cultural Centre and Energy China Nigeria.
