Christian professionals urge EFCC to strengthen oversight on local government funds

The National Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intensify the monitoring of funds allocated to local government areas following the financial autonomy granted to them by the government.

During a courtesy visit to EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, NCYP Chairman Isaac Abrak emphasized the need for strict oversight to ensure prudent management of local government resources. He noted that effective utilization of these funds could drive grassroots development, reduce poverty, and improve infrastructure.

“We come from the grassroots and understand the challenges at the local government level. With the newly granted autonomy, even if local governments achieve just 40% of their expected development goals, we will see significant progress. That is why we are here—to advocate for stricter monitoring and to offer our partnership in ensuring that public funds serve their intended purpose,” Abrak stated.

He also commended Olukoyede for his leadership at the EFCC, highlighting the Commission’s professionalism and its landmark victory in the 2023 P&ID case. Furthermore, Abrak expressed concern over the increasing involvement of Northern youths in cybercrime, urging the EFCC to intensify enforcement efforts in the region.

In response, Olukoyede appreciated the group’s visit and encouraged them to use their platforms to promote national unity and integrity. “Doing the right thing transcends religious beliefs. Let us continue to operate as people of integrity, regardless of our faith,” he said.

He assured the delegation that the EFCC is already taking steps to enhance financial accountability at the local government level. “We have a dedicated Fraud Risk Assessment and Control department that closely monitors allocations, contract awards, and disbursements to ensure that funds are used appropriately,” Olukoyede affirmed.

The meeting reinforced the shared commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria’s public financial management.
