The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to the leader of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Bodejo, in the sum of ₦2 billion as he stands trial over an alleged $2.33 million money laundering case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice I.E. Ekwo, who delivered the ruling on Monday in Abuja, ordered that Bodejo must produce two responsible sureties in like sum as part of the stringent bail conditions.
The court ruled that one of the sureties must own landed property within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), while another must provide evidence of tax clearance certificates for the 2023, 2024 and 2025 tax years.
Justice Ekwo further directed the court’s Registrar to verify all documents and particulars submitted by the sureties before the bail conditions would be deemed fulfilled.
As part of the conditions, the court ordered Bodejo to surrender his international passport and directed the Registrar to notify the Nigeria Immigration Service of its custody. The defendant was also barred from travelling outside Nigeria or beyond the court’s jurisdiction without prior judicial approval.
The judge subsequently adjourned the case to October 5, 6 and 7, 2026, for the continuation of trial.
Bodejo was arraigned by the EFCC on July 9, 2026, on a 12-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering involving $2.33 million.
According to the anti-graft agency, one of the charges alleges that on January 11, 2022, Bodejo knowingly accepted $100,000 in cash from Sa’idu Abubakar, a former Accountant-General of Bauchi State who is currently in police custody, without routing the transaction through a financial institution as required by law.
The EFCC contends that the cash payment exceeded the statutory transaction threshold prescribed under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended), thereby constituting an offence punishable under the Act.
Bodejo has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the trial is expected to continue in October.
