- CoAS emphasizes unwavering loyalty
In a concerted effort to fortify national security and address evolving security concerns, Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has urged recently promoted senior officers of the Nigerian Army (NA) to demonstrate exemplary leadership and amplify their commitment to combating insecurity, particularly in the North West and other volatile regions of the country.
This charge was delivered during the investiture ceremony held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1 in Asokoro, Abuja, on Thursday, December 28, 2023, where 47 Brigadier Generals were elevated to the rank of Major General.
Dr. Matawalle underscored the significance of the officers’ promotions, attributing them to their courage, unwavering dedication to duty, and tireless efforts. He emphasized that their elevation serves as a recognition of their diligence, professional conduct, and selfless sacrifices in service.

The defence minister stressed the imperative for the newly promoted officers to lead by example, inspire their subordinates, and collaborate seamlessly with other security agencies to overcome the prevailing security challenges in the nation. He commended the officers for their exceptional leadership skills, strategic acumen, and profound understanding acquired over the course of their careers.
In extending felicitations on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Dr. Matawalle assured the officers of the Federal Government’s commitment to their welfare and ongoing support for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, also congratulated the newly promoted officers, acknowledging their competence, diligence, and loyalty as key factors contributing to their well-deserved promotions. The COAS recognized the sacrifices made by the officers’ spouses and families and emphasized the responsibilities associated with their new ranks. He urged them to continually seek knowledge on diplomatic, economic, and political dynamics, fostering a logical and objective approach in their contributions to the NA.
Gen Lagbaja emphasized the need for unswerving loyalty to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. He called on the officers to breathe life into his Command Philosophy, aimed at transforming the NA into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.

Major General Gabriel Ajetunmobi, speaking on behalf of the newly promoted officers, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for endorsing their elevation and creating an enabling environment for the COAS to lead the Nigerian Army. He affirmed the officers’ motivation to remain committed and dedicated to the service of the Nigerian army and the nation at large, aligning with the CoAS’ vision.
