On Democracy Day, ActionAid Nigeria has emphasized the need for the Nigerian government to enhance the electoral process and strengthen democracy through impartiality, independence, and transparency.
In a statement, Andrew Mamedu, Country Representative of ActionAid Nigeria, highlighted the significance of Democracy Day as a milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, honoring those who have tirelessly worked to establish and sustain democracy.
Mamedu stated, “Today, we celebrate a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. As we commemorate Democracy Day, ActionAid Nigeria acknowledges the efforts of those who have worked tirelessly to entrench democracy in our country. Their sacrifices have given us a voice, a choice, and a chance to shape our collective destiny.”
He underscored the importance of robust electoral and judicial systems in promoting democracy and national development, urging the government to maintain and enhance these systems’ impartiality, independence, and transparency. Specifically, he called for strengthening the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free and fair elections reflecting the people’s will.
Mamedu also stressed that democracy is a crucial tool for addressing the nation’s socio-economic challenges. He urged the government to prioritize inclusive and equitable processes to ensure citizens’ voices are heard and their needs met.
“Our leaders should prioritize the common good and work towards revitalizing our economy. We urge them to implement economic policies that benefit all Nigerians, create sustainable jobs, and reduce inflation. Specifically, we call on the government to implement a living minimum wage that reflects current economic realities,” he added.
Addressing human rights, Mamedu called on the government to tackle persistent violations and ensure accountability for perpetrators. He also emphasized the need for gender equality and women’s empowerment, advocating for equal access to political participation, economic opportunities, and social services for women.
As Nigeria marks 25 years of democracy, ActionAid Nigeria urged a renewed commitment to democratic principles and good governance. Mamedu called for collaborative efforts between the government and the public to develop policies reflecting the needs and aspirations of all Nigerians, aiming for a democracy that promotes accountability, transparency, and equity.
“Together, we can make democracy work for the people, providing quality education, healthcare, infrastructure, jobs, and opportunities, and ensuring justice and equality for all,” he concluded.
