In line with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) policy of zero tolerance towards assault on its operatives, a Magistrate Court in Ibadan has sentenced a driver to three years in correctional service custody for attacking FRSC personnel on patrol.
According to Acting Corps Public Education Officer FRSC Headquarters Abuja, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, during the court proceedings, Magistrate Mrs. Olatunji presented the charge of assault against Mr. Alloy Paulinus, citing a violation of Section 356(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. 2 Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000. Mr. Paulinus pleaded guilty to the charge.
The defendant’s counsel requested leniency, highlighting that Mr. Paulinus was a first-time offender who showed remorse after spending two days in police custody. The counsel also sought the release of the truck impounded by the FRSC since June 12, 2024.
After considering the plea and the defendant’s admission, the court sentenced Mr. Paulinus to three years in correctional custody with an option of a N50,000 fine. The magistrate cautioned the defendant against future misconduct towards security personnel performing their duties. The court also ordered the release of the impounded truck, noting that medical expenses for the injured FRSC staff had been settled.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed satisfaction with the judgment, commending the judiciary for its swift action. He urged motorists to desist from assaulting FRSC operatives, warning that such actions would be met with stringent legal consequences.
