A dynamite explosion shattered the peace of Sabon Pegi, a residential area in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, early on Sunday, January 26, 2025. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 am, caused widespread panic among residents as the blast destroyed property and left several people affected.
Preliminary reports indicate that the explosives were stored in a rented apartment by a local artisan miner. The apartment was reportedly used to accommodate his workers, and the presence of dynamite in the premises went unnoticed by nearby residents until the tragic incident.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with debris scattered across the area and affected residents scrambling for safety. While the exact number of casualties and extent of property damage are yet to be confirmed, emergency response teams have been deployed to manage the crisis.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed its awareness of the situation and is working in close coordination with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). The agencies have dispatched response teams from NEMA’s Minna operation office to assess the extent of the damage, provide assistance to affected residents, and ensure that safety measures are implemented to prevent a recurrence.
A joint investigation by local authorities and emergency agencies is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the incident. Officials have called on members of the public, especially those involved in mining activities, to adhere to safety guidelines and ensure proper handling and storage of explosives.
The explosion has reignited conversations around the regulation of artisanal mining activities in Niger State, which has become a hub for such operations. Residents and stakeholders are urging authorities to implement stricter oversight to safeguard lives and property in mining communities.
Meanwhile, relief efforts are being coordinated to support the displaced residents and restore normalcy to the affected area.
