Ebola Scare: Two suspected cases test negative in Adamawa

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that two individuals suspected of having Ebola Disease in Yola, Adamawa State, have tested negative following two rounds of laboratory testing.

The agency said there was currently no laboratory-confirmed Ebola case in Adamawa, adding that the previously confirmed case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) remained the only confirmed case reported in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by its Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, the NCDC said it was working closely with the Adamawa State Government, through the State Ministry of Health and Human Services, to investigate the suspected cases.

According to the agency, the alert was received by the Adamawa State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre in the early hours of October 30, 2026, following the identification of two individuals presenting symptoms suggestive of Ebola.

The individuals were immediately isolated, while appropriate public health measures were initiated. Samples were also collected and subjected to laboratory testing, which returned negative results after two rounds of tests.

Idris commended the Adamawa State Commissioner for Health and his team for their proactive response, assuring that the NCDC would continue to provide technical support to strengthen the state’s response operations.

He urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information or speculations, advising the public to rely on official government and public health communication channels.

The NCDC director-general explained that Ebola is a serious infectious disease requiring prompt identification, appropriate clinical management and effective infection prevention and control measures.

He advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding, particularly following relevant exposure, to seek immediate medical attention and disclose any relevant travel or contact history to healthcare workers.

He also warned against self-medication, urging members of the public to follow the advice of qualified health professionals.

The agency said it would continue to monitor the situation in collaboration with the Adamawa State Government and other relevant stakeholders, promising to provide updates as verified information becomes available.

It reaffirmed the commitment of Nigeria’s public health authorities to protecting citizens through early detection, evidence-based interventions, transparent communication and coordinated disease surveillance and response.
