Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 100 suspected internet fraudsters in various locations across Enugu State. The arrests were made during early morning sting operations on Wednesday, May 5, 2024.
These operations were based on actionable intelligence regarding the activities of an organized syndicate of internet fraudsters operating along Ibagwa-Nike and other areas in the Enugu metropolis.
The EFCC, in a coordinated effort, executed the raids simultaneously in multiple locations, catching the suspects off guard. The operation was aimed at dismantling the syndicate believed to be involved in various cybercrimes that have been affecting both local and international victims.
Items recovered from the suspects during the operation include three exotic cars, numerous mobile phones, and several laptops, all of which are believed to have been used in their illicit activities. The EFCC has stated that these items will undergo forensic analysis to gather further evidence against the suspects.
EFCC’s spokesperson, in a statement, emphasized the commission’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and reiterated the importance of public cooperation in providing timely and actionable intelligence. The commission thanked the community for their support and urged them to continue reporting suspicious activities.
The suspects are currently undergoing preliminary interrogations and profiling. Upon the conclusion of the investigations, they will be formally charged and arraigned in court. The EFCC assured that it will follow due process in the prosecution of the suspects, ensuring that justice is served and that those found guilty are held accountable.
This large-scale operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the EFCC to combat internet fraud and protect the integrity of Nigeria’s financial systems. The commission has reaffirmed its resolve to continue its fight against all forms of economic and financial crimes, aiming to create a safer cyberspace and restore public confidence.
