The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its fight against cybercrime with the arrest of 35 suspected internet fraudsters in Aba, Abia State.
The operation, conducted by the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, took place early on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Among the suspects apprehended are 34 men and one woman, highlighting the persistent issue of cybercrime in the region.
The individuals arrested include Emmanuel James, Ukaomo Jefferson, Felix Onyema, Daniel Chimaobi, Chukwuemeka John, Prince Ogbonna, Charles Daniel, and Emmanuel Igboanugo, among others. The EFCC disclosed that the suspects were nabbed in a coordinated sting operation following credible intelligence on their alleged involvement in fraudulent online activities.
Recovered from the suspects were 48 high-end mobile phones, nine laptops, three luxury vehicles, a wristwatch, and an international passport. These items, believed to be tools and proceeds of cybercrime, are now in the custody of the EFCC and will be used as evidence in subsequent investigations and legal proceedings.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the menace of internet fraud, which has continued to tarnish Nigeria’s image globally. Speaking on the operation, a representative of the Commission urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. “We rely on the support of the public to identify and apprehend individuals involved in cybercrime. Together, we can protect our society from the adverse effects of these illegal activities,” the official stated.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court once investigations are concluded. Meanwhile, the EFCC has assured the public of its resolve to intensify efforts in combating financial crimes across the country.
Cybercrime, commonly referred to as “Yahoo-Yahoo” in local parlance, has become a significant concern in Nigeria, with young individuals increasingly involved in fraudulent activities. The EFCC continues to implement strategies to deter such acts and educate the public on the dangers of internet fraud.
