Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 37 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud in Awka, Anambra State.
The all-male suspects were apprehended during a carefully coordinated sting operation carried out at Commissioners’ Quarters, Dr. J. O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite. According to the EFCC, the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to fraudulent internet activities, popularly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo” in local parlance.
Items recovered during the raid include six exotic cars, several laptops, and mobile phones, which are believed to have been used in carrying out their alleged fraudulent schemes.
The EFCC noted that the arrests are part of its ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and other forms of financial fraud, which have become a growing concern in the country. Cybercrime not only damages Nigeria’s reputation but also undermines the integrity of its digital and financial systems.
The suspects are currently in EFCC custody and undergoing interrogation. Officials stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover further details about their activities, including possible links to international fraud networks.
The Commission assured the public that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that justice is served.
This latest operation highlights the EFCC’s intensified crackdown on cybercrime, a menace that disproportionately affects young people and continues to tarnish Nigeria’s global image.
