EFCC arrests 74 suspected internet fraudsters in Abuja hotel raid

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 74 individuals suspected of engaging in internet-related fraud in a major operation carried out in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Commission, the suspects were apprehended in the early hours of Monday, June 30, 2025, during a sting operation at Joyous Hotel, located in Nyanya, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The arrests followed credible and actionable intelligence indicating that the individuals were involved in various forms of cybercrime.

During the raid, EFCC operatives recovered 86 mobile phones believed to be tools used in committing the alleged offences, a rifle pistol, and three motorcycles. The presence of a firearm among the recovered items has raised further security concerns, suggesting the possibility of wider criminal activity beyond internet fraud.

The EFCC stated that preliminary investigations have already commenced, with digital forensic analysis of the confiscated devices underway to uncover the scope and methods of the suspected fraudulent operations. The agency noted that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

This latest crackdown forms part of the Commission’s ongoing nationwide efforts to combat cybercrime and bring perpetrators to justice. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to cleansing the country of internet fraud, which it said continues to damage Nigeria’s global reputation, discourage legitimate business, and prey on innocent victims both locally and abroad.

The Commission also warned that hotels and other hospitality businesses that provide safe havens for cybercriminals risk facing sanctions, including closure and legal action, for aiding and abetting fraudsters.

The EFCC called on members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information that could help identify and dismantle criminal networks across the country.
