EFCC clarifies Akure arrest amid misinformation

In response to widespread misinformation regarding the recent arrest of 127 suspected internet fraudsters, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the facts of the operation.

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, operatives from the Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC conducted a well-coordinated sting operation at two clubs in Akure. Acting on credible intelligence, the operation led to the arrest of the suspects without any incidents, as EFCC personnel adhered strictly to professional conduct.

Contrary to social media claims of brutality, including a trending video purportedly showing two women with whip marks, the EFCC has dismissed these allegations as false. The Commission asserts that the video may have been staged and will undergo forensic analysis to determine its authenticity. The EFCC is committed to taking legal action against those behind this misleading content.

The EFCC emphasized that no suspects were assaulted, brutalized, or subjected to any dehumanizing treatment during the arrests. Claims of tear gas usage are also unfounded, as EFCC operatives do not use tear gas in their operations. Additionally, there was no damage to the CCTV system at the clubs. Instead, the device was removed by club staff, under the direction of EFCC operatives, to secure footage for further investigation. The club manager, who confessed and facilitated the CCTV removal, is currently in EFCC custody and assisting with the investigation.

Reaffirming its commitment to professional standards, the EFCC stated that its Standard Operating Procedures prohibit the use of brute force or unprofessional conduct. The agency maintains respect for human dignity and the rule of law in all its operations.

The EFCC has completed profiling the suspects, who will now face prosecution.
