EFCC grills trader over alleged N192,000 counterfeit currency in Enugu

Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have commenced investigations into a 31-year-old trader, Oduburu Lucy Oluchi, also known as Eze Chiamaka Lucy, over alleged possession and circulation of counterfeit currency amounting to N192,000.

Oluchi was arrested on December 23, 2025, at Eke Nibo Market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State by fellow traders who reportedly intercepted her while attempting to purchase goods with suspected fake notes.

She was subsequently handed over to the Agunechemba Vigilante outfit, which transferred her to the Department of State Services (DSS) for preliminary investigation.

The EFCC disclosed that upon receiving the suspect from the DSS on December 29, 2025, it discovered that she was in possession of counterfeit N1,000 notes totalling N192,000, bearing six different serial numbers.

According to the Commission, 25 notes carried the serial number A/33 334233; 30 notes bore B/33 334432; 51 notes had A/83 353504; 43 notes were marked A/29 894433; 42 notes carried A/29 894434; while one note bore A29/898248.

The anti-graft agency stated that the alleged offence contravenes Section 151 of the Criminal Code as well as Sections 4 and 5 of the Counterfeit Currency (Special Provisions) Act.

The Commission added that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
