EFCC issues warning against obstructing officers during lawful duties

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing that obstructing officers of the Commission from carrying out their lawful duties constitutes a criminal offence.

The caution comes in light of Section 38(2)(a)(b) of the EFCC Establishment Act, which expressly deems it unlawful to impede EFCC officers in the execution of their duties, with potential consequences including a minimum prison sentence of five years.

This advisory arises from a concerning trend wherein individuals and entities under investigation by the EFCC have resorted to illegal means, such as hiring thugs, to obstruct the lawful operations of the Commission. Such actions not only violate the law but also pose significant challenges to the EFCC’s mandate to combat economic and financial crimes effectively.

On numerous occasions, EFCC operatives have demonstrated considerable restraint in the face of such provocations, aiming to prevent a breakdown of law and order. However, this measured approach has, unfortunately, been misinterpreted as a sign of weakness. The EFCC emphasizes that this leniency should not be mistaken for an inability to enforce the law.

In light of these developments, the EFCC unequivocally states that it will no longer tolerate any attempts by individuals or organizations to impede its operations. Any such interference will be met with swift and appropriate punitive measures, in accordance with the law.

This warning serves as a reminder to the public of the importance of upholding the rule of law and cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the fight against corruption and financial crimes. The EFCC remains committed to fulfilling its mandate to ensure transparency, accountability, and integrity in Nigeria’s financial systems, and it calls upon all citizens to support these efforts by refraining from any actions that obstruct justice.
