EFCC nabs 49 suspected fraudsters in Lokoja, recovers pistol

Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 49 suspected internet fraudsters during a coordinated operation across several locations in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The suspects were apprehended over the weekend, between Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, 2025, following actionable intelligence linking them to a network of cybercrime-related activities. The intelligence-led operation targeted known hideouts of suspected fraudsters within the city.

During the raid, EFCC officers recovered an unlicensed loaded pistol from one of the suspects. Preliminary interrogation revealed that the individual in possession of the firearm claimed to be a former member of a cult group, raising additional concerns about the security risks posed by some of the suspects.

In addition to the firearm, the EFCC recovered various incriminating items including high-end smartphones, laptop computers, and two luxury vehicles believed to have been acquired through proceeds of illegal activities. The devices are expected to undergo forensic analysis to uncover further evidence of cybercrime operations.

“The success of this operation is a testament to our commitment to ridding society of economic and financial crimes,” a senior EFCC official said. “Cybercrime remains a serious threat to our economy and national image, and we will continue to pursue those who engage in it.”

The suspects are currently in EFCC custody and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded. The Commission has reiterated its warning to those involved in cybercrime to desist, as it continues to intensify efforts to clamp down on such activities nationwide.
